Self-Pierce Riveting vs Spot Welding

Following are some of the advantages of the Self-Pierce Riveting System:

  • Self-Pierce riveting has approximately 30% greater strength for a given sheet thickness.
  • Self-Pierce does not require extensive monitoring equipment.
  • The cost of Self-Pierce equipment is less than that of spot welding.
  • Self-Pierce does not require nor use expensive transformers.
  • Self-Pierce does not require costly electrodes.
  • The energy cost when using Self-Pierce riveting is the equivalent of running a 5 H.P. motor.
  • When using adhesives with Self-Pierce you do not produce harmful smoke or destroy the adhesive bond.
  • Self-Pierce has no aluminum oxide or ozone fumes.
  • When a Self-Pierce riveting head is attached to a robot arm, a rivet can be installed every 2-3 seconds. This includes the movement of the robot.
  • Self-Pierce allows the joining of two and 3 dissimilar materials. The most common of these are steel, aluminum and plastic.
  • Self-Pierce allows visual inspection of joint without destroying the part.
  • The cost of Self-Pierce rivets is approximately 2 cents per rivet.
  • The common spot welding practice of adding 20% - 30% more fastening areas because you are not assured of a good bond is not necessary with Self-Pierce riveting.
